Meet SEHA Artist Cindy Tevis!

SEHA Artist Cindy Tevis loves anything Vintage Halloween. Cindy creates many forms of Halloween art, specializing in Shabby Hag Decor. " Shabby Hag Decor is my Halloweenish spin on Shabby Chic. I take outdated homed decor items and re-paint them in a prim Halloween style." She also creates greeting cards, Halloween poetry and polymer clay charms.
"I began selling my Halloween art after doing a search on ebay. I had no idea there were so many others just like me out there!"
Cindy treasures her fellow SEHA members. " I truly hope to stay in contact with them all forever! SEHA is more than just another group to me, it is really part of my life."
Cindy has many fond memories of Halloween through the years, but the best times were when her kids were in their Junior High years. "They are much easier to scare at that age. We would have Halloween slumber parties, and really freak those kids out! That is when I began to have Halloween parties, they just sort of morphed into big family celebrations as the kids got older."
Her most memorable Halloween costume was that of an old lady. "I had a big flower in my hair, and my Mom padded me pretty good on top and bottom! I went to my Aunt's house, and she wouldn't open the door for me. Later we asked why, and she said she thought I was the Avon Lady!"

Meet SEHA Artist Vena Cava!

SEHA Artist Vena Cava has a whimsical humorous style. You can see Vena's sense of humor in each painting. She loves the subjects in her paintings, witches bats, cats, vampires, dogs, mice. "I love all things spooky but loathe cruelty and gore, and I always see animals as individuals with individual personalities, so it's second nature to me to illustrate fantasy situations they might find themselves in."
Watercolor is her choice of medium for her paintings, she also creates altered art.
Vena searches out bits and pieces at yard sales, and Michael's bins for use in her altered art. "For challenges, I've made a necklace out of bamboo tiles, a haunted closet out of cardboard, and most recently, carved styrofoam for a jack-o-lantern snowman!"

Vena's favorite thing about Halloween, "I get very witchy and semi-obsessed thinking about spells and strange things happen to delight and amuse me. The year after my 3-legged hellhound died, I set up a Day of the Dead altar with his picture and a trail of marigold petals into the house so, like angelitos, he would know a visit would be welcomed. Just after midnight, I was wakened by the bed creaking as an invisible weight climbed on and stretched out against me, his head against the back of my head, his tail brushing the back of my legs, just as he always slept with me in life. It wasn't sad, or scary, just deeply touching and familiar. In a few moments, he simply wasn't there anymore, and I haven't heard from him since. I take that to mean he is happy."
"I also love buying decorations - I just ran up my charge card $83 at Target!"

ON Being a SEHA member Vena loves the "AWESOME ARTISTS!!! I have learned so much and every person is such fun! I am constantly inspired by the challenge art, and I have collected a few ACEOs and prints from my fellow artists. I got my very favorite pendant from Brialee, a grinning Day of the Dead skull."

Vena began selling her Halloween art on ebay when, "My medical office job canned 95% of the support staff three weeks before Christmas and I found my income halved with no jobs available. To keep from going insane from worry, I started drawing again after not picking up a pencil since high school. I read some library books on watercolor painting, and since I had already been buying ACEOs, I decided to try some. It took several months to make that first sale, but I eventually found my niche. My buyers are so cool, and I consider several of them friends since we email back and forth. I was invited out of the blue to join SEHA by a member - until then I didn't even know there WERE ebay groups!"

Vena celebrates the Halloween season with the local Memphis Elmwood cemetery ghost tour. "Costumed volunteers stand at various groups (by torchlight, no electric light) and tell their stories as the crowd follows a marked path through the cemetery. It's a huge place and takes about two hours. I always wear my floor length black crushed velvet cape with red lining - and I've gone so many times, I end up answering as many questions as some of the new inexperienced docents!
Once I rented a hearse (an adventure in itself, not something easy to rent!) and took some friends in vampire garb to a daylight Elmwood tour. Another time I took a friend (also in costume) on a horse drawn carriage ride downtown and threw candy to the people outside the Peabody Hotel. For several years I would throw open my closet to a few women friends who would goth themselves to the gills and we'd go eat dinner at a fancy restaurant around Oct. 13th. No one would know what to make of us, so they treated us like royalty and we always had a blast. Some people even had us pose for pictures in the parking lot.
This year I'm going to a new play based on Edward Gorey's art - called Gorey Stories."

What is your party's theme?

The first step to creating a great Halloween party is the "Theme"
Should it be creepy, or gory, or old fashioned, or silly. The ideas are practically endless. The decision should be partly based on the age group of the guests. If it is a teen party, it had better have some gore involved to avoid a bunch of disappointed party goers. If it is mainly smaller children, it had better have some humor in it, to avoid a bunch of crying party goers. When planing your party try to gear it towards your guests. It is so easy to just do what you like, but in the end party success is measured by the satisfaction of those that came to it. Adult party goers enjoy the humor aspect too. Party favors are always appreciated. It is important to keep your costs down, as Halloween parties can become quite expensive.
Don't buy expensive props for a Halloween party. Chances are that you will be the disappointed one if you do. Not much time is spent by guests oggling over your decorations. Guests come for the food, and fun! You do need to decorate though, however it makes the most sense (and cents) to make your props out of old household items. You want the right atmosphere when your guests arrive, so spend some effort at the front door, or up the drive. This will set the mood. Next, make sure that once they get inside the party area, they are not disappointed. It should be festive, and colorful. The party area should scream out FUN! Also, there should be at least one big event waiting in the wings. A kind of climax for the party. It can be as simple as a costume contest, with a prize, or as elaborate as a "Haunted Trail" or hayride. Just make sure there is an "event" for your guests to look forward to. Last, don't let the whole party die after the climax. It is important to keep the party spark going for a little while longer. This would be a good time to give out party favors, or maybe dish out a creepy disgusting looking dessert. Then when only a few guests remain, those people that never want to go home, break out the old scary movies, and chill out with them for a couple of hours.
I speak from experience. Do not "over plan" your party. Do not try to fill every minute with structure.
Steps to a great Halloween party:
1) get a theme
2) set the mood
3) have a tentative plan (go with the flow)
4) spend your time and effort on the party climax
5) let them down gently (have something planned for after the party climax)
6) Send each guest home with something (even if it is "left overs")
Follow these steps and your guests will want to come back next year.

Meet SEHA Artist Lynda Mihaly!

I'm proud to introduce: Oh Haunted One! Our leader, Lynda Mihaly. Lynda started as a stained glass artists, she made sun catchers, lamps and stained glass windows. After this began to bother her wrists, she then started to paint gourds and other things for Christmas shows. As to how she got started on painting "Halloween art" Lynda says "Encouraged by an internet friend,
I did some Halloween gourd ornies....that was it, didn't look back. And since I love Halloween it wasn't hard!"

She describes her style as scary, whimsical, soulful and sometimes even thought provoking. She loves to work with color, and has a hard time using stain over those bright colors.

Lynda describes where she draws her inspiration from: "I get in moods of art. Sometimes something stirs my inner soul, that's when I do my silhouette witches. Other times a gourd may keep calling me to be born by way of art, that's where those scary and sometimes silly gourd ornies are made! I also like to paint wood , canvas, and ACEO's."

Being the leader of SEHA, Lynda enjoys the SEHA group. She loves sharing ideas and viewing others art. Sometimes even getting to learn something about them as a person!

Asked about her favorite Halloween costume, "A Bag Lady, and no one knew who I was! Added bonus: It was my own Halloween party! Many times I dress as a Witch. But wait that's not a costume!!!! That's me!"

Her most memorable Halloween. "There are soooo many!" She can't decide on just one.

Meet SEHA Artist Marceline Hayes!

Marceline also known as Phoebe43 on ebay has a very unique style. Once introduced to her work, you will recognize her distinct style when you see it. She has a somewhat primitive style, with a touch of wonder and magic. Being a self taught artist, she classifies herself in the "outsider" art category. Marceline comes from an artistic family, but has only been selling her art for a couple of years. Once she found on-line auction houses, she opened up and began to create much more. "Once I realized that I had an outlet to sell my work, I began to paint all the time! I try and do something, however small, each week because painting clears my head and is good for my soul!"

She began creating Halloween art, because she LOVES halloween! "It is my favorite holiday and I've always had lots of halloween decorations. Then when I got serious about painting a few years ago, I naturally gravitated to halloween art. So, I did some "Spooky Trees" and then added more and more themes such as witches, graveyards, etc. from there as I became more comfortable with painting. I've been selling Halloween art online now for nearly 3 years."

As a SEHA member, Marceline loves the artists in the group and finds that looking at their art and talking with them about art stimulates her creativity and motivation. "They are a great bunch of super friendly talented people. I'm amazed what the others come up with in our monthly challenges."

With the exception of taking her kids trick or treating, her favorite thing about Halloween is getting out her decorations, and decorating. She loves the spooky atmosphere!

Remembering when she was a kid "My mom used to sew all my costumes. I have several great memories of those costumes and how excited I was by them. She made me a witch outfit with a cool little forest green cape; an angel outfit where she made the halo out of a wire hanger and tinfoil, etc. I have more of a holistic sense of Halloween than any one particular thing."

Many of Marceline's paintings feature her famous "spooky trees". She loves to paint them because "You can really create a sense of mood with the curving, flowing branches. I do a lot of graveyards but I do lots of witches as well. I do larger paintings, mostly acrylic, on canvas but also do a lot of small aceos. Me and my friend Heather at MoonWand Designs create our own greeting cards as well featuring original art and verse."

Meet SEHA Artist Brialee Haworth-Walker!

Brialee Haworth-Walker of Raven Fae's Creations, is a Whimsical Halloween artist with a touch of the macabre. Her creepy-cute style is one that you will become addicted to.

She started early in her Halloween endeavors by creating Halloween party favors for her Grandma Lovey's birthday. Brialee says "it just grew from there! Grandma owned a business and many of her customers took interest in what I created, even purchasing some items and in later years making their own requests." As a teen, Brialee would draw huge collages with Halloween themes that her Grandma used to display on the wall of her lounge. As she entered her twenties, she began to create art dolls, and in her thirties she started making her creepy-cute sculpts. Now being in her forties, she does it all!

On SEHA, Brialee says "I love being a member of SEHA and connecting with all the kindred spirits in the group! And the challenges are always interesting, just seeing how everyone interprets the monthly theme. There are a lot of extremely talented artisans in SEHA and I'm proud to be amongst them."

Brialee loves Halloween celebrations, and one of her favorite customs is "The Dumb Supper that I host. I really go all out and decorate the dinner table bootifully, complete with black gossamer around the backs of the chairs, candles, flowers - the whole works. It's really quite a spiritual, as well as culinary, experience. My favorites offered in the annual feast are colcannon and the remembrance cookies!"

Brialee remembers Halloween at her Grandma Lovey's house celebrating her birthday.
"Still clad in our costumes. She'd have the lights dimmed low and everything was decked out in the vintage black and dark orange decorations. We'd be up until the wee hours delighting in lively conversations and spooky ghost stories we'd make up on the spot. She passed in 1991 and I took over the reins. Now we celebrate at our house with all sorts of things going on all month, from pumpkin carving, bobbing for apples, fright nights (marathons of watching scary movies), creating and displaying spooky yard decorations, haunted hay rides etc. and then all the events on Halloween itself. It's definitely the most wonderful time of the year!!"
